August 2024

Happy August! We are well into launching the 24-25 school year, which is promising to be a great year for 9th graders in Washington and Oregon!

Based on our impact, we are continuing to expand our partnerships across the region. This section includes timely updates for partners of various designations, including charter, non-charter, OSPI grant funded, or school-funded.

CHSS News:

Take a look at this freshly released video from Poudre High School in CO – please feel free to share with your team members, staff, students, and families! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1e8WqncN0c

Washington State OSPI Update:

Invitations from OSPI are expected to be sent out around mid-August. To prepare for participation in the grant your school or district must have access to the Electronic Grants Management System (EGMS) through OSPI. Upon completion of the tasks outlined in the invitation, the funds will be added to your building budgets.

Please reach out with any questions. We look forward to our continued partnership and working together this year!

Timely Tools

CHSS Roadmap Implementation: Phase 1 Checklist

(Google doc) and (Word doc)

Phase 1 is where we establish structures and foundations of strong 9th grade success teams and in each driver on the Roadmap. This Phase 1 Checklist makes this clear and approachable.

CHSS Roadmap Implementation: Phase 2 Efficacy Rubric

Once those foundations have been set, we move to Phase 2 where we build team efficacy, agreements, agendas and protocols. One tool to look at is the Phase 2 Team Efficacy Rubric.

9th Grade Success Budget Tool

This Grant Budget Tool DRAFT.docx can help teams see their budget and plan for required components of our work. We encourage schools to prioritize funds for CHSS collaboratives, team meetings, and ensuring strong data system processes.

Featured Practice

Launching for Success: This year, we have reserved CHSS Summer Institutes for new schools. Schools in year two or more of 9th Grade Success work are planning their 9GS launch in individual school or district teams.

CHSS has now created resources specific to each school’s phase of implementation and student impact. This overview document will help your team determine best practices for launching your year successfully. This is not intended to be a distinct and linear progression, elements of your work will be in more than one phase at any given time.

If you are in Phase 1, this WORKBOOK is an excellent tool for getting the pieces in place for a strong start.

If you are in Phase 2, this GUIDE will assist you in identifying steps to increase team efficacy and/or integrate qualitative data.

If you are in Phase 3, this GUIDE will assist you in providing instruction to students to build competencies, maximize impact of qualitative data, improve adult discourse, or implement fair grading.
