CHSS National Webinar – Assessment Strategies: How Will We Know if They’ve Learned it?

October 19, 2022 @ 3:30 pm 5:00 pm UTC

This is the second webinar of a yearlong 5-part series

A standards-based, culturally and historically responsive year- long plan is the foundation to a guaranteed, equitable and accessible instructional core. A guaranteed, equitable and accessible instructional core is the root of an effective school. In this webinar, explore Understanding By Design “What is our acceptable evidence for learning?” We will identify tools and questions to first “unwrap” the standards established in Webinar 1 so assessment is clear. Next, teams and leaders will reflect on how to provide multiple pathways for assessment. The tools shared with your teams can be used to support naming, creating and analyzing common assessments. Research shows that when we are clear about assessment expectations students often exceed expectations. Research is also clear that waiting to reveal what is on a “test” or assessment and not aligning assessment to skill, concept or tasks results in “hidden” and inequitable results. Clarifying unit outcomes with students at the start of instruction allows students maximum opportunity to apply their unlimited potential and not only pass classes but to be equitably positioned for college and career opportunities. Instruction should be matched to these equitable and fair assessments so that it is accessible, responsive and provides the feedback we need as teachers to improve outcomes for students.
